Journal Article Analysis (1-3-2)
This article is directed at society in general, but more specifically to the individuals that pay attention to the image shown above. Throughout the journal article, it is commonly asked "Is this perceived as it is meant?" Or, "Is this supposed to be taken as offensive or discriminate?" The author makes sure you are thinking and analyzing throughout the entire article.
The main idea throughout the article is about the image above and the idea behind it in the 2004 British General Election. David Wall, the author of the article, discusses how and the controversial photo is effective, and somewhat offensive to many people. The photo has the two Conservative Politicians, Michael Howard and Oliver Letwins' heads on pig bodies and wings. More publicly expressed as, "When pigs fly!" is when these two will do what they say they will do. It is also thought that within this advertisement, both of the men are Jewish. It is a known stereotype that Jewish people are dirty. Not only is this advertisement racist and discriminatory, but also very ignorant.
The key idea that I take away from this article is that even though advertisements like this may be effective for campaigning and marketing, they are racist and judgemental nonetheless. There has to be a more effective way to win and advertise something without using stereotypes and judgements towards one another. This is what our society has come down to and something should be done about it.
"It is and it isn't: Stereotypes,
Advertising, and Narrative".

The stereotype that Jewish are dirty and not honest is a new to me. The stereotype in my community is the opposite. The article seems to be trying to hide something about the opposing party, why else would they be slinging mud instead of facts.
ReplyDeleteI agree with David Wall’s view and his discussion how and the controversial photo is affected thousands of Jewish people around the globe. People use stereo type promotion campaign to grab the huge attenuation and latter they just say sorry to the victim. Yes there are many ways to promote the things without hurting a single person and without racism and judgmental nonetheless thoughts. Education is enlightening every part of world and hope it will bring changes in people’s perception in near future.
ReplyDeleteWhether or not the photo is effective, it definitely is offensive. Stereotyping and racist behaviors have always been harsh towards the person, society, culture, or objects that is being stereotyped. It is so because those racist behaviors and stereotypes are over-generalized views or thoughts. These thoughts may have proved true once in a while, but it is not necessary that it applies to every other person or that it will hold true every other time. So, stereotyping or showing racist behavior is completely wrong, even if it provides advantage to some other group. Every person on the Earth is equal, and they must be treated equally.

This article discusses several racial and religious stereotypes. It is impossible for many people (especially politicians) to do anything other than point fingers and call others names because they have no personal successes to talk about.
ReplyDeleteThe picture and the stereotyping would be very offensive to me, they are assuming that you will vote for them after they post advertisements like that! Who would vote for a person that would use advertising like that? The person who uses advertisements like that must not be very intelligent. Good paper!
